February 1 - Redding - Shasta College: Organic Gardening Class Begins: 4 - 7 pm Organic Gardening Practices Class (AGEH 71), register through Shasta College: www.shastacollege.edu/admissions/. Class will be held every Monday evening until May 3. In this one-unit class, students in the class will learn how to start and grow summer vegetables using organic methods, how to apply for organic certification and how to plan crops for harvest all summer long and much more. February 6 - Redding: Shasta Chapter California Native Plant Society Field Trip 9 AM meet at the south entrance to the Sundial Bridge near the Turtle Bay Museum café.Join us for a winter walk on the wild side of the Arboretum in Redding. We will take the 2-mile paved loop walk around the Arboretum, and check out the Sulphur Creek drainage, the Sacramento River frontage and the recovery of the area after the Summer 2008 wildfire. The walk is level. We may include the new 3/4-mile loop trail in back of Turtle Bay Museum, to see the nesting bald eagles and other winter birds on the Sacramento River. February 20 - Redding: Shasta Chapter California Native Plant Society Field Trip 9 AM meet in the south parking lot behind City Hall on Parkview Avenue. Clear Creek Vista Trail walk. This is an easy four-mile walk though riparian, black oak woodland and chaparral on a trail above Clear Creek. The changing face of the trail presents a diversity of plant species. Possible flowers blooming: Henderson’s shooting star, manzanita, pipevine, western hound’s-tongue and snowdrop bush. Most of the walk is level, however there is about a 400-foot elevation climb. Native plant gardening and wildlife-friendly landscapes are gaining popularity. These gardens satisfy our desire for drought resistant, lower maintenance landscapes that also offer habitat for wildlife. Spring is a good time to plan native gardens and prepare for the nesting and summer seasons. Our focus will be on native and other plants adapted to our area, backyard bird feeding, and maintenance tips. A self-guided tour that includes an English sweet tea in a shady, scenic garden. The tea is served by Victorian costumed "servants".
